Vocation, Vacation, Vampire 🧛

This post was originally shared in our email newsletter on June 2nd, 2023.

Alan Watts drew a helpful distinction between job and vocation:

“The difference between having a job and having a vocation is that a job is some unpleasant work you do in order to make money, with the sole purpose of making money.”

I am immensely fortunate to view work as a vocation, one that provides me a sense of fulfillment, contribution and connection—and to be surrounded by others who feel the same way.

We’ve learned a few things over the years to help keep that vocational flame alive. One of those is the essential restorative power of taking a break.

Even when you care deeply about your work (perhaps especially when you care deeply!) burnout is inevitable if you overdo it. The widespread tragic burnout among  healthcare workers  social workers, and others who have dedicated themselves to a vocation of service is often the result of workers being overstretched, being asked to take on too much, or simply not being given a chance to take a pause and take care of themselves.

In light of this natural law, we take time for rest and recuperation with a two-week company-wide break in June. As our Keapee (“Keap employee” 😉) Claudia puts it: “It’s the greatest thing on Earth!”.

We come back recharged, with fresh perspective and inspiration.

What does this mean for candle orders during our break? Our goal is to do this without you ever really noticing we’re away!

We laid out a quick FAQ. The short summary:

  •  If you have a subscription shipment scheduled during the break : we have already moved it to process either the week before, or the week after our hiatus. You can see the new scheduled date in your  subscriber account.

  •  For one-off orders:  we’ll be shipping all orders placed on or before June 7th before the break. Orders placed between June 8-25 will ship the week of June 26th.

Please get in touch with us in the next few days with any questions, and we will be happy to lend a hand.

With warmth and gratitude as always,

— Harry, and the whole Keap team

If you enjoyed this article, you might enjoy our not-quite-weekly free newsletter where we share our lessons on our journey toward our regenerative vision, product launches, and behind-the-scenes happenings.

We left social media in 2021 because we found its current mechanics didn’t align with our purpose to facilitate connection to the natural world, our loved ones, and our own spirits. Since then, our newsletter has become a vibrant place for healthy conversation around topics ranging from alternative business ownership models to happy hour cocktail recipes.

What our readers say about it:

“It’s very thoughtful and not sales-y like all other marketing newsletters.”

“I like reading how a business is trying to be as progressive as possible in a capitalist system.”

“I normally delete emails from businesses but with the Keap newsletter I was actually interested in reading through! Made me feel that you guys really care about us and the work you do."
